Where can I get free or almost free moving boxes? And tips for moving quickly and cheaply?

I am in the process of a move due to a divorce. I am a single Mom and trying to get this move done as quickly and cheaply as possible. I am moving about 500 miles and the majority of my stuff is going into storage. Therefore, I really need sturdy moving boxes instead of putting everything in garbage bags etc. I am open to any suggestions!

go to your local department and grocery stores. they usually have tons of empty boxes. if you ask the manager one day, you will probably be able to have quite a decent amount by the next day. often, when you go to ask, they will give you a few right then and there.

Check with your grocery stores. Ask them to set some boxes aside for you. Wishing you good luck!

I see moving boxes listed on Craig's List a lot. You could even post a "Wanted" ad there (www.craiglist.org) or on freecycle.
Another good place to get good boxes are liquor stores. They usually have lots of them. They're generally not real huge boxes, but they're great for smaller stuff. They're PERFECT for packing books, because they're small enough that…when you fill them up…they're not so heavy that you can't lift 'em.
Good luck!

craig's list or ask your real estate office who is moving into the neighborhood so you can go over on their moving day and relieve them of their boxes. Also check out your neighborhood section of Freecycle, where you can post a wanted ad every day.

I actually used the flip top crates available at home depot . ( About $5 )
And I realized that storing Non personal items was a waste of $$$$ . Old clothes and dishes can easily be replaced for less than the extra storage space costs .
Yard sale / garage sale everything that is not a family memento .

The flip crates are best for storage because the plastic is Not susceptible to water damage if you're packing books and photo albums etc . ( storage place can have rain / water / vermin issues and the crates keep out vermin too )
They also stack wonderfully without crushing the crates below them .
AND the bottoms do NOT fall out with heavy books and stuff
like cardboard boxes always do .

Just use the lawn bags for the bed comforters .

Sorry about the divorce stuff

Sorry to hear about your divorce. The last time we moved we ordered our boxed from MovingBoxesWorld.com and got some great prices. We were unsure of what we need, and they were great with helping us pick out the right sizes.

If you're don't have much to move, try going to your local grocery store/Walmart/etc and asking for their empty boxes. They usually will be happy to help.

You can always try calling moving companies to see if they recycle boxes like Competitive Relocation Services in MA. They can be very cheap or free! Good luck

Hmm… for quick and affordable moving I can suggest StorageDeluxe. They also provide packing material but I have my doubts if they would provide it for free! For more information visit or call them on their toll free number (877) 989-STORE – (877) 989- 7867.
